National Cancer Survivors Day Resources

The following cancer information resources should be used for informational and educational purposes only. All specific medical questions about your health needs should be presented to your own health care provider.

Websites

  • American Cancer Society Cancer Survivors Network
    The Cancer Survivors Network (CSN) is a Web-based support service for cancer survivors, their families, caregivers, and friends. Users who register have the ability to also create their own home page, search the home pages of others, participate in live webcasts, e-mail other registered survivors and family members, create their own virtual support group, set up and participate in live chats, and post inspirational material on the "expressions gallery".
  • Cancer Survivors Online
    Cancer Survivors Online offers cancer information, resources, and support for cancer patients, families, friends, and the professionals who treat them.Cancer Survivors Online is created and maintained by cancer survivors willing to share their knowledge and experiences. Information is presented in categories, each supplemented with lists of additional reading.
  • National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation
    The non-profit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation supports hundreds of local hospitals, support groups, and other cancer-related organizations throughout North America that hold National Cancer Survivors Day events by providing guidance, education and networking.
  • National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship
    National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) is the only patient-led advocacy organization working on behalf of people with all types of cancer and their families. Our mission is to ensure quality cancer care for all Americans by leading and strengthening the survivorship movement, empowering cancer survivors and advocating for policy issues that affect cancer survivors' quality of life.
  • Outlook: Life Beyond Childhood Cancer
    Outlook is an interactive Web-based information system designed to address the needs of survivors of childhood cancer and their families.

Online publications

  • Cancer Survival Toolbox
    (National Coalition For Cancer Survivorship)
    The Cancer Survival ToolboxT: Building Skills that Work for You is a self-learning audio program that covers topics, or skills, that can help people with cancer meet the challenge of their illness. Additional topics have been added to address the elderly and cancer, the uninsured or underinsured with cancer and caregivers. While the program has been designed to assist those of you who have recently been diagnosed with cancer, it will also help anyone at any stage of illness who is facing hard decisions and changes in life because of cancer. Family members and caregivers can also use this Toolbox on behalf of a child or anyone else with cancer. The Cancer Survival Toolbox, Basic Skills, is also available in Spanish and Chinese (print only).
  • Cancer Survivorship
    (National Cancer Institute)
    Fact sheet on cancer survivorship. Excerpt from the NCI Cancer Research fact sheet entitled "Types of Cancer".
  • Facing Forward: A Guide for Cancer Survivors
    (National Cancer Institute)
    This 43-page booklet presents a concise overview of important survivor issues, including ongoing health needs, emotional concerns, insurance, and employment. The easy-to-use format includes cancer survivors' experiences, practical tips, record-keeping forms, and resources. It is recommended for cancer survivors, their families, and friends.

Support groups (Online)

  • Discussion Groups Index
    (American Cancer Society Cancer Survivors Network)
    These groups discuss various aspects of different individuals' cancer experiences, including diagnosis, treatment, relationships, and daily living with cancer. These discussion groups are for survivors and caregivers, and offer a forum to talk about individual experiences with cancer. Some discussions focus on specific cancer sites and others address issues that can affect everyone.
  • Long-Term Cancer Survivors Group
    (Association of Cancer Online Resources - ACOR)
    The ACOR.org cancer information system currently offers access to electronic mailing lists and a variety of unique Websites. The mailing lists are specifically designed to be public online support groups providing information and community to cancer patients, caregivers or anyone looking for answers about cancer and related disorders.

Survivor stories

  • Cancer: There's Hope
    (R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation, Inc.)
    Written by Richard Bloch (The "R" in H & R Block), Cancer: There's Hope details his survival from "terminal" non-small cell lung cancer. Bloch writes about how he was cured despite having been pronounced incurable. Mr. Bloch has since devoted his life to helping cancer patients.
  • Featured Stories
    (American Cancer Society Survivors Network)
    A collection of personal stories of cancer survivors and caregivers, told in their own voice, in their own way, uninterrupted.

  • UPMC Cancer Centers Patient/Family Education Center
    Provides informational materials to patients with cancer and their families, friends and caregivers. The Center has an extensive library of up-to-date cancer-related information that can be used to supplement information provided by your health care team.
