Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Resources

The following prostate cancer information resources should be used for informational and educational purposes only. All specific medical questions about your health needs should be presented to your own health care provider.

Free cancer screenings

UPMC Cancer Centers provide free prostate cancer screenings in September during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. If you are a man between the ages of 50 and 75 (age 45 if you are African American or have a family history of prostate cancer), call 412-647-2811 to register for a screening near you. The free screening will consist of a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.

  • Prostate Cancer Education Council
    PCEC founded and coordinates Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, one of the oldest and largest screening efforts in the country. Their site contains information on free or low-cost screening sites across the country, as well as information onfundraising and awareness events and an article series.
  • Prostate Cancer Foundation
    This private organization identifies and supports prostate cancer research that will rapidly translate into treatments and cures. The site includes information about disease and treatment, living with prostate cancer, advocacy, medical news and research efforts. Many online articles are available at this site.
  • National Prostate Cancer Coalition
    An active alliance of prostate cancer patients and survivors, family members, medical groups, advocacy organizations and caring individuals dedicated to ensuring that adequate federal funds are allocated to help support promising prostate cancer research.
  • US TOO! International, Inc.
    The world's largest independent, charitable network of support groups for men with prostate cancer and their families. US TOO! groups offer offer fellowship, peer counseling, education about treatment options and discussion of medical alternatives without bias.

    Information, connections to message boards, support group chats, FAQs, news and empowering ways to actively fight prostate cancer.

    Created by prostate cancer survivors, sessions are targeted to newly-diagnosed men, their partners and children.
  • Prostate Pointers
    Offers a number of mailing lists and discussion groups for men with prostate cancer and their families.
  • Kids Konnected
    Provides friendship, education, understanding and support to children who have a parent with cancer.

    Provides informational materials to patients with cancer and their families, friends and caregivers. The Center has an extensive library of up-to-date cancer-related information that can be used to supplement information provided by your health care team.
