Special care for cancer-related concerns

UPMC Cancer Centers behavioral health clinicians are experienced in helping people who are undergoing cancer treatment. Our clinicians work with people at all stages of cancer care and cancer survivorship. They understand the special problems associated with cancer, as well as the opportunities for emotional growth.

Types of treatment programs include:

  • cognitive-behavioral and supportive strategies to enhance the patient and family’s adjustment to cancer
  • relaxation training to reduce the side effects of treatment and reduce pain, sleeping difficulty, and anxiety
  • counseling for disease-related and treatment-related changes in physical functioning, body image, and sexuality
  • stress management training to assist people in resuming or maintaining every day activities
  • individual, couple, and family psychotherapy to help with adjustment to cancer
  • referral for psychiatric evaluation and consultation for medication when appropriate
  • referrals for support groups and other community resources
