Program Interim Co-Directors

Adam Brufsky, MD, PhD Adam M. Brufsky, MD, PhD

Adam M. Brufsky, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He serves as the Interim Co-Director of the Magee Breast Cancer Program of UPMC Cancer Centers and Medical Director of the Women's Cancer Center at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, Pittsburgh, PA.

Dr. Brufsky received an undergraduate degree in Chemistry (Cum Laude) from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. He earned his advanced degrees in Developmental Biology after completing a combined MD/PhD/Clinical Fellowship Program at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, CT. Dr. Brufsky's research and top academic performance earned him many awards including the Young Investigator Award of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, the Scholar in Medicine Award and the Internal Medicine Award. After serving his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, he completed a Fellowship in Medical Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This Fellowship was followed by appointments as Associate Physician and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard.

Dr. Brufsky is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Association for Cancer Research. He has published numerous abstracts and research articles in leading journals, including the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Lancet. Dr. Brufsky is Principal Investigator on a number of research grants funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the US Army Breast Cancer Research Program. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the Pittsburgh Breast Cancer Consortium; a program awarded $1.7 million from the US Department of Defense to increase community access to innovative clinical trials for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. The level of care provided by the Women's Cancer Center at Magee-Womens Hospital has grown dramatically under Dr. Brufsky's direction. The Center will oversee 750 new breast cancer consultations and an estimated 8,000 patient visits this year. The Center recruited approximately 180 patients in 2002 for clinical trials and actively runs more than 20 protocols in the breast cancer clinical trials program.

Dr. Brufsky's training responsibilities include teaching attending physicians for the University of Pittsburgh's Cancer Institute, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Oncology Rotation in the Department of Medicine. Additionally, he serves as Director of the Integrated Life Sciences Selective Courses, Neoplastic Diseases Course at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

 

Ronald Johnson, MD Ronald R. Johnson, MD

Ronald Johnson, MD is assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and serves as Interim Co-Director of the Magee Breast Cancer Program of UPMC Cancer Centers. He received his undergraduate education from the University of Scranton graduating summa cum laude in 1979. He attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, graduating cum laude in 1983 and completed surgical residency training in the hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1989.

Dr. Johnson joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in 1989 as part of Magee-Womens Surgical Associates. He assisted in the development of the Comprehensive Breast Center bringing the disciplines of diagnostic radiology, surgical oncology, and medical oncology side-by-side to promote coordinated breast cancer care. His practice is currently devoted to the management of benign and malignant disease of the breast. In this capacity, he has trained numerous residents and surgical oncology fellows. His clinical interests are centered in the minimally invasive approach to breast cancer diagnosis and surgical therapy.

Dr. Johnson is board certified in Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member on the Breast Cancer Committee of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast Project and serves on multiple committees in the American Society of Breast Surgery. Currently, he is the CME director for the Breast Program and serves as Director of the weekly Multidisciplinary Breast Conference. He has authored book chapters on breast anatomy and management of breast cancer, given numerous lectures locally and nationally on breast health issues and, together with his colleagues at Magee-Womens Hospital, created an educational video for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. The Breast Cancer Education Series, a free lecture series to the tri-state area, was created by Dr. Johnson to serve the educational needs of patients and families of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
