Albert P. Knowles Research Fund — Supporting Basic Science

Name of Fund:
Albert P. Knowles Research Fund at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute
Description of Fund:
The fund was established as a dynamic financial resource with the flexibility to allow for immediate application of support for UPCI's most pressing research needs. The Research Fund greatly enhanced UPCI's recruitment of Richard Wood, Ph.D., one of the most accomplished molecular scientists in the world, who now leads our Molecular and Cellular Oncology Program.
Year established:
2000

Total Gifts/Support to Date
Over $1,000,000

Major events associated with Fund:
The fund is open to contributions from the public.

Inspiration for Fund/Project:
Remembering the energy and zest for life that Albert showed in his struggle with liver cancer has mobilized and motivated many of Albert's family and friends to contribute to cancer research in his name.
Message from the donor/ supporter:
"This whole thing got started because of one person: Albert. And even though this Fund began because of one person, it has taken many people -- a whole city -- to make this happen. We set out to raise money for early-stage cancer research and to educate others about the importance of basic science, and we are accomplishing exactly what we set out to achieve. And right now, the great work that has been made possible by the Knowles Fund supporters is helping people who are very dear to us get the best chance at living their lives to the fullest despite cancer." --Mary Knowles McClintock
Message from the beneficiary:
"Good basic research science can only be done by recruiting the brightest young people who can carry out work with creativity and energy. With the help of the Knowles fund, I was able to recruit a group of bright, young postdoctoral fellows to come to UPCI and start my laboratory here. They form the core of my research group, and are making important new discoveries about the basic molecular biology of cancer cells." --Rick Wood, PhD
