Program Leader

Joseph L. Kelley, MD

Joseph L Kelly, MD Joseph L. Kelley, MD, is the Director for the Magee-Womens Gynecologic Cancer Program of UPMC Cancer Centers; Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences; Director, Division of Gynecologic Oncology; and Assistant Professor of Surgery, University of Pittsburgh. He is also a clinical investigator at the Magee-Womens Research Institute.

Dr. Kelley is a noted researcher who works closely with his colleagues at the Magee-Womens Research Institute and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Much of Dr. Kelley's research centers on clinical trials for the treatment of gynecologic and breast malignancies. Dr. Kelley serves as the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG). Additionally, he serves as a PI on a number of studies which investigate treatments for women's cancers. A trained surgeon, Dr. Kelley also studies the use of sentinel node technology to detect and stage gynecologic cancers. Specialized areas of research include DNA repair in breast and gynecologic malignancies, as well as the body's reaction to cancer drugs.

After graduating medical school from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1985, Dr. Kelley was accepted into the residency program at the University of Pittsburgh/Magee-Womens Hospital where he spent the next four years. In 1988 Dr. Kelley was accepted into the Rutledge Fellowship at the University of Texas's MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology.

Robert P. Edwards, MD

Robert P Edwards, MD Dr. Edwards serves as Director of Research and Outreach Education of the Center of Excellence in Ovarian Cancer at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC. He also serves as Professor in the School of Medicine, and Vice Chair for clinical affairs for the Division of Gynecologic Oncology.

Dr. Edwards' research interests include cervical and ovarian malignancies, cancer vaccines and immunotherapy. Like Dr. Kelley, he serves as Principal Investigator for GOG, and is also the PI for a number of pharmaceutical industry-sponsored studies. He additionally serves on the National Gynecologic Phase I Trial Committee, which helps select projects for the earliest phases of research.

Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Edwards served as the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center. Before going to Kentucky in 2002, Dr. Edwards had served as Medical Director of Gynecological Oncology at Magee and Director of the Gynecological Oncology center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
