Gynecologic Oncology
Welcome to the Magee Gynecologic Cancer Program of UPMC Cancer Centers. As director of the Program, I hope that this site provides you with basic information about ovarian and other gynecologic cancers and introduces you to the personnel and activities of the Program.
The mission of the Gynecologic Cancer Program is to offer the best care for cancer patients throughout all phases of their disease. The Program strives to provide state-of-the-art treatments and therapies for those with ovarian and gynecologic cancers, be an educational resource for patients and the community about the disease, and provide an environment that stimulates excellence in cancer research.
The Program employs a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of ovarian and gynecologic cancers. An experienced and dedicated team of gynecologic oncologists, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, research and behavioral scientists, as well as an active clinical staff are available. The team approach is emphasized as cancer care is complex and requires the input of many specialists.
The Program provides cancer care services to 400 women each year who are afflicted with gynecologic malignancies and over 200 women each year affected by breast cancer. Available treatment options include sentinel lymphatic mapping, radiation therapy to include the use of partial breast radiation, minimally invasive surgery approaches, immunotherapy, gene therapies, photodynamic therapy, and multimodality therapies for gynecologic cancers. We also offer support groups for women with these cancers. A wellness clinic has been established which focuses on general health issues found by survivors.
Research efforts include NCI-sponsored clinical research and locally developed protocols using advanced therapeutic technologies. The Program has active collaborations with the Biologic Therapeutics, Cancer Control and Prevention, Cancer Genetics, Behavioral Medicine and Oncology, and the Molecular Therapeutics/Drug Discovery programs of UPCI.
Although the Program is based at Magee-Womens Hospital, our programs extend throughout UPCI and into the greater Pittsburgh community. Outreach efforts include educating about new advances in the screening and treatment of gynecologic cancers. The Program offers many new cancer prevention strategies including cervical cancer vaccines and development of new ovarian cancer biomarkers.
