Head and Neck Cancer Program

Program Co-Leaders

Jennifer Rubin Grandis, MD, FACS

Jennifer Grandis, MD, FACS Dr. Grandis is a professor of otolaryngology and pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and co-leader of the Head and Neck Cancer Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Consistently funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute, Dr. Grandis's research laboratory is devoted to the study of the processes that control squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. This research is focused on better understanding the biology of cancer development, and also investigating new gene therapies to treat cancer in patients. Dr. Grandis also actively mentors fellows, post-doctoral and pre-doctoral students at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Grandis completed medical school, her residencies in otolaryngology and surgery and a fellowship in infectious disease at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. During this time she received many awards and distinctions, including the Kenneth H. Hinderer Award in Otolaryngology and the Leo H. Criep Award in Medicine.

Athanassios Argiris, MD

Jennifer Grandis, MD, FACS

Dr. Argiris, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is a dedicated physician who serves as co-leader of the Head and Neck Cancer Program. His clinical research focuses on the development of novel treatments for head and neck cancers, and also new preventative and screening strategies for patients with potentially curable early stage head and neck cancer.

Dr. Argiris is involved in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), an organization that performs multi-center clinical trials; he is a member of ECOG’s Head and Neck Core Committee, and he is the principal investigator for multiple ECOG trials in head and neck cancer. In addition, Dr. Argiris is collaborating with other institutions towards therapies for the management of potentially curable head and neck cancer.

Dr. Argiris completed his Medical Oncology training at Yale University. He came to UPMC from the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill., where he served as an assistant professor.
