Free Prostate Cancer Screenings Offered By University of Pittsburgh Department of Urology

PITTSBURGH, August 31 – In recognition of September's Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the University of Pittsburgh department of urology in collaboration with US TOO, a prostate cancer support group organization, are offering free prostate cancer screenings Tuesday, Sept. 21, and Thursday, Sept. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Shadyside Medical Center, 5200 Centre Ave., Suite 209.

Prostate cancer is a serious health concern for American men. It will strike more than 230,000 men in the United States this year alone; 12,000 of these men will reside in Pennsylvania. Risk factors include being over age 45, being African-American and having a father or brother with prostate cancer.

Although prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of death in American men, it can be cured if detected early. Men whose prostate cancer is detected early have an excellent survival rate. Screening is the only way to detect prostate cancer at an early stage.

Men age 45 and older and men at high risk (African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer) age 40 and older who are not under the care of a urologist, have not been screened in the past year and who do not have a personal history of prostate cancer are eligible. Please call the University of Pittsburgh department of urology at (412) 605-3015 for more information and to schedule a screening appointment.
