UPMC Cancer Centers Presents, “A Reason To Hope: New Advances in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer” in Greensburg, PA on Nov. 17
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 9 – Of the 56,290 people expected to die of colorectal or colon cancer in 2005, half could have been saved if they had received screening tests for early detection, according to the American Cancer Society. Researchers have found natural substances in the body that promote cell growth. These are known as growth factors. Some cancer cells grow especially fast because they respond to growth factors more than normal cells do. New drugs can reduce the effects of these growth factors and prevent cancer cells from growing so quickly.
To provide more information about colorectal cancer, The Arnold Palmer Pavilion, a joint venture of UPMC Cancer Centers and Excela Health, will sponsor, “A Reason to Hope: New Advances in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Mountain View Inn, Greensburg, Highlands Room.
Hyoung Kim, MD, division of hematology/oncology at UPMC; Bruce Bradley, MD, a gastroenterologist; and Mark Zelkovic MD, a surgeon, will lead the panel discussion.
The talk is one in a series of cancer lectures sponsored by UPMC Cancer Centers for patients, their families and the public.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Registration is required and space is limited. Free parking will be available. For more information and to register, please call (800) 533-UPMC (8762).
