In Conjunction with National Minority Health Awareness Month, UPMC Cancer Centers Presents: "A Reason to Hope: New Advances in the Treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia"


PITTSBURGH, March 03 – Over 72,000 people are affected by sickle cell anemia in the United States. The disease is a major concern in minority health, occuring in about 1 in 500 African-American births and 1 in 900 Hispanic-American births. While there is no cure for the disease, education and treatment can reduce its effects.

To provide more information about sickle cell anemia, UPMC Cancer Centers, in conjunction with National Minority Health Awareness Month, will sponsor, "A Reason to Hope: New Advances in the Treatment of Sickle Cell Anemia," at 6:30 pm, Monday, April 3, in the Cooper Conference Center Classroom, ground floor of the Hillman Cancer Center.

Timothy M. Carlos, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and chief of hematology and oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, will present the lecture.
