Free Skin Cancer Screenings Offered by the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute

PITTSBURGH, June 30 – The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) is offering free skin cancer screenings from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 29 at the First Presbyterian Church, 252 College Ave., Beaver (view on map). The screenings are being offered in conjunction with the Grant Channell Memorial Golf Outing held every year to honor the memory of Grant Channell, who died of melanoma at the age of 27, and to raise money for the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Program at UPCI. This year's golf outing will take place on August 19 at Black Hawk Golf Course in Beaver Falls.

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for about half of all cancers. More than 1 million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the end of this year alone. Melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, diagnosed in nearly 55,000 Americans each year. Most skin cancers are caused by UV radiation produced by the sun. The best way to lower the risk of skin cancer is to avoid being outdoors in intense sunlight too long and to practice sun safety when outdoors.

Please call Lisa Huntley at (412) 623-4636 for more information about the skin cancer screenings or golf outing.
