Free Screenings Offered in Recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
PITTSBURGH, Aug 24 – Prostate cancer is a serious health concern for men, especially for African-American men, who are nearly twice as likely to die from this disease as white men. During the next 10 years, the total number of men in the United States diagnosed with prostate cancer is expected to increase by 40 percent from approximately 230,000 to 300,000 a year. The good news is, that when detected early, prostate cancer is a treatable and survivable disease.
In recognition of September being Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, UPMC Cancer Centers and the University of Pittsburgh's department of urology, are offering free prostate cancer screenings Tuesday, Sept. 19, and Thursday, Sept. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Shadyside Medical Center, 5200 Centre Ave., Suite 209.
Men aged 50 and older and men considered at high risk (African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer) aged 40 and older, who are not under the care of a urologist, have not been screened in the past year and who do not have a personal history of prostate cancer are eligible. Please call the University of Pittsburgh department of urology at (412) 605-3015 for more information and to schedule a screening appointment.
