PITTSBURGH, August 10, 2007 – On Tuesday, Sept. 11, and Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, UPMC Cancer Centers and University of Pittsburgh Physicians Department of Urology will be holding free prostate cancer screenings. The screening will include a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam. It is for men 40 and over who are not already under the care of a urologist, who have not had a PSA blood test in the past 11 months, and who do not have a personal history of prostate cancer.
The screening will be held at Shadyside Medical Building, suite 209, 5200 Centre Avenue, Shadyside, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. To schedule an appointment, call 412-605-3015.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer diagnosed in men in the United States. African American men, and men with a strong family history (one or more first degree relatives diagnosed at an early age), are at highest risk, but all men can be affected. When discovered early, prostate cancer is highly treatable. Early stage prostate cancer usually has no symptoms which makes screening extremely important.
