Outpatient Services

The majority of patients at UPMC Cancer Centers receive treatment on an outpatient basis. All UPMC Cancer Centers network locations provide outpatient services and, depending on the location, may include specialists from medical oncology, radiation oncology, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, social services, nutrition, clinical research and health education.

Patients have access to a broad range of clinical trials and can access specialty services provided at central UPMC Cancer Centers locations in Pittsburgh as needed. Should a patient require inpatient care, it is conveniently available at many UPMC Cancer Centers locations throughout the region.

UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC Presbyterian / UPMC Shadyside

  • Outpatient Services -- Radiation Oncology
    Through the coordinated activities of its three divisions (clinical, physics and basic science) the Department of Radiation Oncology seeks to provide the highest quality clinical radiation oncology services to patients. The Department has extensive expertise in the development and use of the latest treatment planning and radiotherapeutic devices for external beam therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), whole body radiosurgery (Cyberknife) and innovations in brachytherapy. The Department also collaborates extensively with neurosurgeons in the use of Gamma Knife stereotactic radiosurgery and with cardiology in the provision of intravascular brachytherapy.

UPMC Cancer Centers at Magee-Womens Hospital

  • Outpatient Services - Medical Oncology
    Magee-Womens Hospital oncology outpatient services are provided at the Women's Cancer Center. The Center consists of two physician consult rooms, six exam rooms, two family and patient consult rooms, eight treatment chairs and two treatment beds. The Center has satellite pharmacy and medical records departments. Phlebotomy services are also available. In addition to medical oncologists, the unit is staffed by nurse practitioners, registered nurses (a majority who are certified oncology nurses), a social worker, a psychologist, pharmacists, medical assistants and patient support assistants. The staff provides state-of-the-art services and is dedicated to creating a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere for patients and their families.
  • Outpatient Services -- Radiation Oncology
    The Radiation Oncology Department within Magee-Womens Hospital is a satellite department of UPMC Presbyterian. The installation of a new computerized tomography (CT) simulator, in conjunction with the two existing linear accelerators and the high dose rate (HDR) treatment unit, will greatly enhance the already vibrant intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and brachytherapy programs in place.

UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC Horizon

  • Outpatient Services - Medical Oncology
    UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC Horizon is located atUPMC Horizon - Shenango. The facility has five treatment chairs and one treatment bed. Services provided include initial evaluations, second-opinion consultations, clinical trial access, treatment administration and follow-up care. The unit also has examination facilities. Patient care is provided by oncology-certified nurses and two private board-certified hematologist/oncologists. Additionally, services that support this outpatient center includes a hospital pharmacy, a laboratory, social services, nutritional services, behavioral health, imaging services and speech/occupational/physical therapy services. The imaging services available include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), ultrasonography (US), nuclear imaging and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning.
  • Outpatient Services -- Radiation Oncology
    Radiation therapy is provided at the LifeCARE Cancer Center located in Sandy Lake. The facility is equipped with one linear accelerator and a simulator. A board-certified radiation oncologist, radiation therapy technicians, a nurse and a physicist provide patient care. A van service is available for patient transport.

UPMC Cancer Centers at the John P. Murtha Pavilion

  • Outpatient Services - Medical Oncology
    Medical Oncology provides initial evaluation and consultation, second opinion consultations, treatment administration and follow-up care. Approximately 20 percent of patient visits are for hematological disorders. The Outpatient facility has three exam rooms and eight treatment beds. In addition to the medical oncologists and oncology nurses, an on-site clinical dietitian is available for nutritional support.
  • Outpatient Services -- Radiation Oncology
    Radiation Oncology includes a staff of radiation oncologists, radiation therapy technicians, nurses, a certified dosimetrist and a physicist.

UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC McKeesport

Outpatient Services at UPMC McKeesport includes medical oncology and radiation oncology capabilities, with new state-of-the-art equipment. The two departments work closely together to supply the best possible care and treatment. The facility provides integrated initial evaluation, second-opinion consultation, treatment, administration and follow-up care. Outpatient Services has seven treatment areas, includding one bed and six treatment chairs, four exam rooms, a conference room/family teaching room and medical records.

  • Outpatient Services - Medical Oncology
    Staffing for the medical oncology unit consists of a medical oncologist, trained oncology nurses, a phlebotomist, consulting social services and consulting dietary services.
  • Outpatient Services -- Radiation Oncology
    The Department of Radiation Oncology contains two linear accelerators, one new therapy simulator and full treatment planning capabilities. Prostate seed implants complement the full range of conventional external beam radiotherapy services.

UPMC Cancer Centers at UPMC Passavant

  • Outpatient Services - Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology
    Outpatient Services at UPMC Passavant provides medical oncology, radiation oncology and thoracic surgical oncology services in one central department. Outpatient Services provides initial evaluation, second-opinion consultation, chemotherapy treatment administration and external beam radiation therapy, as well as follow-up care. High-dose radiation (HDR) and prostate seed implant treatments are offered. The outpatient facility contains four examination rooms; a special procedure room, a simulation room, an external beam radiation vault room; a patient and family consultation room; a physician consultation room; nine treatment chairs; a treatment bed; and medical records services. In addition to the oncologists and oncology collaborative practice nurses, staff includes a behavioral medicine specialist, clinical pharmacists, financial counselor, a social worker, a clinical dietitian and an occupational therapist who provides a lymphedema program for breast cancer patients.

  • Outpatient Services - Medical Oncology
    Medical Oncology provides initial evaluation and consultation, second opinion consultations, treatment administration and follow-up care.

UPMC Cancer Centers community locations

The UPMC Community Network includes private practice offices located throughout western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia. These office-based clinics provide a range of in-house services, including laboratory procedures such as blood testing and drug preparation, as well as office procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, electrocardiogram (EKG) and phlebotomy services. Some office-based practices are equipped to provide specialty care, such as chemotherapy administration and outpatient stem cell transplantation. All patients are able to receive state-of-the-art care close to home while benefiting from UPMC Cancer Centers' premier strengths in screening programs and clinical trials.
