Paraganglioma Program

Clinical Services

Polygonal epithelioid tumor cells

Paragangliomas (PGLs) are usually localized in the head and neck. These tumors can, however, spread, either by metastasizing (traveling) to other parts of the body, or by being locally aggressive. Paraganglioma is usually treated by surgical removal. In cases where surgery is less advisable or where the disease has recurred locally, radiation therapy may be effective in treating the tumor. Our group of surgeons have a great deal of experience in removing PGLs.

In advanced cases where a malignant paraganglioma has metastasized to other parts of the body, systemic approaches including chemotherapy and/or biologic therapy are options. Surgery and radiation therapy play a limited role in this setting.

Much of the research of the Paraganglioma Program is focused on developing new medical and biologic methods to treat late-stage paraganglioma, including:

  • Developing novel methods of chemotherapy or biologic therapy
  • Genetic testing using samples derived from PGL patients, to improve the detection of PGL
  • Continued research into the biology of PGL
