Courses for nurses, pharmacists and health care professionals who care for cancer patients are outlined below. Registration for UPMC employees will be through uLearn. Registration is required for all courses. The registration form (for non-UPMC registrants only) is available at the top and bottom of this page. Most courses are held on the UPMC Shadyside Campus. Any changes in this course schedule will be flagged in red.
If you cannot attend any course for any reason, you need to directly notify the course registrar by leaving a message at 412-623-3652 or emailing Karen S. Tondera at tonderaks@upmc.edu.
Participants who are NOT UPMC employees who cancel less than 1 week prior or do not attend will not have the registration fee refunded.
UPMC employees who do not cancel and do not attend will have their unit billed the full registration fee, and their managers will be notified.
If you have a question regarding class/course changes, cancellation or storm warning, "course status" announcements will be available at 412-623-3652.
If Pittsburgh Public Schools are closed due to weather conditions, our courses are cancelled. (Course schedule is not changed by school delays).
For any adverse weather conditions, please use your best judgment.
The program sponsors reserve the right to make changes or cancel the program because of unforeseen circumstances. Attendees will be given notification with as much notice as possible about changes and cancellations.
Course times unless specified are: Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and lectures begin at 8:00 a.m. The courses conclude at 4:30 p.m.

Cooper Conference Center, Hillman Cancer Center
This one-day course provides a general overview of cancer, the disease process, treatments, symptom management, and its impact on patients and families. It is intended to enhance the practice of both health care professionals and ancillary staff who care for cancer patients in hospitals, ambulatory care, home care, hospice, extended care or rehabilitation settings.
Staff members can attend only the morning session or the entire day. The morning topics are applicable to all staff, including nurses, unit clerks, office staff and other health care professionals, who want to learn more about what cancer is, treatment options, and psychosocial needs of cancer patients. The afternoon topics are geared for nurses and other staff who need to learn more about assessment and care of oncology patients, blood products and selected oncology emergencies.

Orientation to Oncology Registration Form for non-UPMC registrants (PDF)
The following five courses make up the Foundations to Practice in Oncology series. It is strongly recommended that University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and UPMC Cancer Centers staff who are required to take the Comprehensive Chemotherapy and Biological Therapies Course take these five courses as a prerequisite. All others may take individual courses of choice. Continuing education credits may be available for these courses.

This course provides an overview of the principles and roles of various cancer therapies. Included are clinical trials, surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological therapies, radiation therapy, stem cell transplantation, complementary therapy, and a review of the pathophysiology of cancer.

This course addresses how health care professionals can help patients deal with physical symptoms and issues related to their disease and its treatment, such as gastrointestinal manifestations, pain, fatigue, cutaneous reactions, nutrition, sexual function and reproductive issues, and psychosocial needs of patients, families, and caregivers.

This three-day course is designed to address needs of nursing, pharmacy and other professionals in relation to chemotherapy and biological therapies. It includes information on current pharmacotherapy, safe handling, and administration of anticancer agents and various issues concerning the management of patients receiving cancer therapy. Completion of this course requires a post-test. Nursing continuing education credit may be available for this course.

This review and test taking time is only for UPMC employees and is OPTIONAL. Please discuss with your manager prior to registration. Exam time is proctored and successful completion will fulfill course requirements.

This two-day course addresses the individual and joint needs of nursing, pharmacy, and other professions in relation to Stem Cell Transplantation. It includes information on current transplantation issues such as patient work-up, disease process, and patient care and management. Selected topics include differentiating types of transplants, mobilization and preparative regimens, growth factors, the role of total body irradiation, transfusion issues, graft vs. host disease, veno-occlusive disease, and other transplant related topics.

We offer monthly programs with ASRT credit with a focus on radiation oncology issues. These are being offered live on the Shadyside Campus and videoconferenced / audioconferenced via webcast (CCWEB - Cancer Centers Infonet) to all interested UPMC sites. They occur on the third Wednesday of every month, from noon - 1pm. Continuing education credit is available for ASRT and nurses.
