The Prostate and Urologic Cancer Program of UPMC Cancer Centers provides state-of-the-art, evidence-based care to patients with prostate, male genital organ* and urologic** cancers by combining the skills and experience of physicians and other health care professionals in an interdisciplinary and coordinated way.

The Program's multidisciplinary approach to prostate cancer care includes physicians and other personnel from the disciplines of medicine, surgery and pathology. The Program is comprised of members of the faculty from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Patients with urological malignancies are provided the best in the diagnosis and treatment of their cancer. The Program offers focused expertise in prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, testes cancer and penile cancer, including the surgical management of these malignancies, through state-of-the-art nerve preservation and reconstructive procedures.

New patients should arrange for their medical records to be forwarded prior to their appointment or hand-deliver them the day of their appointment. All patients should hand-carry their radiology films including x-rays, CT scans, etc. and any imaging studies and original microscopic slides for Program physicians to review. Patients may need to hand-carry their pathology slides to have them reviewed by our expert pathologists. Patients should allow adequate time for a thorough examination and expect to provide a complete medical history, including current medications.

Specific services for prostate and urologic cancers

• The Program provides outstanding surgical expertise in radical prostatectomy and radical cystectomy. The Program has dramatically increased the number of radical prostatectomies performed.
• Radiation expertise provides state-of-the-art, intensity-modulated irradiation and brachytherapy.
• Nationally recognized research and clinical programs are studying the behavioral issues important to and impacting on the quality of life in patients with genitourinary cancer.

* Cancers of the prostate and male genital organs include those of the penis, prostate, testes, epididymus, spermatic cord and scrotum.

** Cancers of the urinary tract include those of the kidney, renal pelvis, ureter, bladder and other (urethra, etc.)
