Cancer patients with acute or chronic pain can receive assistance through the Outpatient Pain Program. A multidisciplinary pain team, which includes physicians, a psychologist, pharmacist, acupuncturist and interventional pain specialists, will work with cancer patients on an outpatient basis to obtain pain relief.
Each patient undergoes an initial comprehensive pain evaluation by one of the pain medicine physicians, Linda King, MD, Medical Director of the Pain Program, or Ron Glick, MD, Director of the Complementary Medicine Program at UPMC Shadyside, and other members of the pain team, based on individual patient needs and goals. Patients can also be referred directly to the acupuncturist, psychologist or interventional pain specialist for a specific evaluation.
Patients are seen on the first floor of Hillman Cancer Center, Suite 140, 5115 Centre Avenue, on the UPMC Shadyside campus. The pain medicine physicians are also available to come to oncology outpatient clinics. Your oncologist or nurse may recommend this service to you or you may ask for a referral to the UPMC Cancer Centers Outpatient Pain Program at Hillman Cancer Center at any time.
