Radiation Oncology Services provides the latest imaging and treatment services to patients at 15 treatment facilities throughout western Pennsylvania. A wide range of cancer types are treated with radiation, including breast, brain, gastrointestinal, gynecological, head and neck, lung, pediatric and prostate cancers.
The Mary Hillman Jennings Radiation Oncology Center serves as the primary center for radiation oncology, with four linear accelerators (the machines that create the particles used in radiation therapy), advanced imaging equipment used to plan treatment, and a High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatment area. The UPMC Presbyterian location has been renovated and contains three linear accelerators, one dedicated CT simulator and HDR brachytherapy treatment facilities.
Many radiation oncology services are also offered at a number of network locations
across the region.

To advance the field of radiation oncology, investigators within the Department are developing and testing new technologies, in addition to evaluating novel applications of existing technologies. For instance, investigations are underway in the Department of Radiation Oncology's physics division to develop dynamic-controlled radiotherapy. Research conducted through the Department's basic science division has recently resulted in an innovative clinical trial of radioprotective gene therapy to prevent esophagitis.
Medical school graduates interested in the Radiation Oncology Residency Program at UPMC Cancer Centers can view residency information here.
