UPMC Cancer Centers works in tandem with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI), which comprises the academic and research activities for cancer at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, to offer patients the latest advances in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment.
At UPCI, more than 600 scientists and health professionals in more than 30 disciplines are working together to help people with cancer. Since its inception in 1984, a primary focus for UPCI has been to conduct research activities that will lead to greater knowledge and understanding of cancer's causes, course and cure.
A major goal for UPCI is to rapidly and efficiently translate groundbreaking research findings into new approaches for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Our many research programs and shared resource facilities work together to learn as much about cancer as possible and to quickly translate laboratory discoveries into effective treatments for patients. In an effort to continuously expand and improve its research programs, UPCI strongly supports its program directors' efforts to focus on the extensive areas of faculty expertise and to pursue the most promising avenues of research.
UPCI's research efforts have provided insights for cancer diagnosis, as well as for potential clinical trials. These efforts have also led to innovative treatments and preventative measures that have been adopted by leading cancer centers nationwide, ultimately benefiting cancer patients across the country and around the world.
