Surgical Oncology
Dr. Hughes specializes in gastrointestinal and oncologic surgery. Dr. Hughes earned his medical degree at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota, and completed a general surgery residency, a research fellowship in surgical oncology, and a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor. He joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in July 2000 where he was appointed to assistant professor of surgery. Dr. Hughes is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Association of Academic Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the Association of VA Surgeons. He has received many awards in his tenure. Dr. Hughes has numerous publications including articles, abstracts, and book chapters. He also has been awarded many grants and has been an educator in gastrointestinal surgery and surgical critical care. His current research interests consist of Molecular Biology of Gastrointestinal Adenocarcinomas and Molecular Methods for Intraoperative Detection of Lymph Node Metastases.
