Surgical Oncology
Dr. Alvelo-Rivera specializes in thoracic oncology, particularly minimally invasive esophageal and lung resections. Other areas of interest include biological therapies for cancer, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, palliative procedures for advanced cancer, early lung cancer detection and screening, and surgery for non-cancer conditions. He has performed the first adult and post-adolescent minimally invasive repairs for pectus excavatum in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania.
Dr. Alvelo-Rivera received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1988 from the University of Puerto Rico, and received his medical degree in 1992 from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Division. Prior to joining UPMC Cancer Centers, he completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency with the University of Pittsburgh in 2002 and his general surgery residency with the University of Puerto Rico Affiliated Hospitals in 1997.
