Physician Biography: Dr. Gretchen Ahrendt

Surgical Oncology

Gretchen M. Ahrendt, MD, FACS is a surgical oncologist and researcher focused on breast cancer. Dr. Ahrendt's interests include the use of ultrasound to optimize breast conservation for breast cancer, minimally invasive breast biopsy techniques, and use of sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer staging. Her research interests include emerging ablative therapies for early breast cancer treatment, patient selection for partial breast radiation, and use of MRI for surgical planning in locally advanced breast cancer.

Dr. Ahrendt is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, American Association of Breast Surgeons, and Association of Academic Surgery. She has contributed many presentations, abstracts and publications on breast cancer related topics.

Dr. Ahrendt received her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was also a resident. She joined the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh in December 2005 after serving as the Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Program at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY from 2000-2005.
