Physician Biography: Dr. Steven A. Ahrendt

Surgical Oncology

Steven A. Ahrendt, MD, FACS is a surgical oncologist specializing in the surgical management of gastrointestinal malignancies and other gastrointestinal disorders. He has written extensively on the management of pancreatic and biliary tract cancers. Dr. Ahrendt performs all techniques for colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, including laparoscopic colectomy and sphincter-preserving surgery. His research interests include the use of molecular screening techniques for cancer detection.

He is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American College of Surgeons, the American Hepatopancreatobiliary Association, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and the Society of University Surgeons.

Dr. Ahrendt received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He completed his residency in General Surgery and additional training in Surgical Oncology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He joined the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh in December 2005 after serving as the Director of the Gastrointestinal Malignancies Program at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY from 2000-2005.
