Surgical Oncology
Arlan Mintz, MD, MSc, FRCS(C), is a neurosurgeon and the Director of the Adult Neurosurgical Oncology Program. He specializes in endoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery, and is actively involved in the stereotactic radiosurgery program using the Cyberknife. His current interests include minimally invasive techniques for brain tumor resection, awake craniotomies and outcomes research. Dr. Mintz also serves as an instructor for the endoscopic skull base surgery course.
Prior to his joining UPMC, Dr. Mintz was the Chair of the Neuro-Oncology Disease Site Group at Hamilton Regional Cancer Center in Ontario, Canada, and directed the Neuro-Oncology clinic at Trillium Hospital in Toronto, where he also developed the Awake Craniotomy Program. Dr. Mintz has lead and participated in numerous professional groups, and was the lead author on the largest randomized controlled trial examining the role of surgery and radiation in the treatment of brain metastasis.
Following Dr. Mintz’s completion of Master of Science Degree in Neurophysiology at the University of Toronto, he completed his medical training at Hamilton, Ontario’s McMaster University in 1990. His Neurosurgery Residency was performed in 1997 at the University of Ottawa, Ontario. He joined UPMC in May of 2005.
