Medical Oncology
Dr. Kirkwood is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chairman for Clinical Research at the University of Pittsburgh as well as the Director of the Melanoma Center at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
Renowned for his work in melanoma research and treatment, Dr. Kirkwood has been Chair of the Biologics of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-one of the largest of our nation cooperative oncology and of the Melanoma Committees. Acclaimed for his advances in cancer research, Dr. Kirkwood is the recipient of many honors and awards including the prestigious ISICR Milstein Award, the UPCI Scientific Leadership Award and the Roosevelt Fellow, given by the American Cancer Society. He is listed in the Best Doctors in America. As a member of many professional and scientific societies, Dr. Kirkwood has served on boards and committees for the National Cancer Center, the Cancer Research Institute, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the John Wayne Cancer Institute Multicenter Selective Lymphadenectomy Trial, External Scientific Advisory Committee, and co-chairs the American Cancer Society Clinical Studies and Epidemiology Study Section. A recognized leader in the field, he is called upon for his consulting expertise both nationally and abroad.
Dr. Kirkwood received a bachelor of arts in biochemistry from Oberlin College and his medical degree from Yale University school of Medicine, where he also was an intern and resident in the field of internal medicine. He was a fellow in tumor immunology at Harvard University.
He has been published more than 500 papers and has spoken at over 140 seminars and invited presentations. Dr. Kirkwood has served on the editorial boards for the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, The American Journal of Chemical Oncology, Developments in Oncology and Cancer Research and served as a journal reviewer for numerous other publications.
