The Stem Cell Transplantation Program is recognized by a number of national organizations that monitor facilities performing bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. In fact, the Program is currently only one of two facilities in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Ohio to be fully accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy (FACT). This designation indicates that the Program has met rigorous standards assuring patients and their physicians that stem cell collection, processing and transplantation is carried out with quality medical and laboratory practices in place. The FACT designation covers both allogeneic (other) and autologous (self) stem cell transplants.
The Stem Cell Transplantation Program also participates in the International Bone Marrow Registry and the Autologous Blood and Marrow Transplant Registry, enabling Program staff to provide patients the greatest opportunity of finding a donor "match" if needed. The Program is an approved transplant center by the National Cancer Institute's Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), a national multi-institutional organization that coordinates and facilitates cancer-related clinical trials. Through ECOG, the Program can offer cancer patients participation in innovative clinical trials of promising new transplant approaches to treat disease.
