UPMC Cancer Centers’ surgeons have extensive expertise in the surgical management of breast cancer. Our surgeons offer patients a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of this disease.

UPMC surgeons have particular expertise in a number of highly specialized technologies, including minimally invasive surgical procedures (where surgery is performed through the smallest incisions possible) to remove tumors. In many cases, our surgeons have helped to develop or refine these cutting-edge methods, including:

• breast conserving surgery
• oncoplastic surgery - combined tumor removal and breast reduction
• sentinel node biopsy
• skin-sparing mastectomy, a procedure that removes the tumor through a small incision and minimizes scarring
• office-based ultrasound and ultrasound guided procedures
• microvascular breast reconstruction, to repair blood vessels damaged during the operation
