Gynecologic Cancers

UPMC Cancer Centers’ surgeons have extensive expertise in the surgical management of gynecologic cancers. As part of the Magee-Womens Gynecologic Cancer Program, our surgeons are on the leading edge of research, diagnosis, and treatment for women’s cancers. Our multidisciplinary approach includes state-of-the-art treatments and therapies for those with ovarian and gynecologic cancers. We have experience in management of the patient at increased risk for gynecologic cancers. We also serve as an educational resource for patients and the community about gynecologic cancer. Particular areas of focus include:

  • ovaries
  • fallopian tubes
  • uterus
  • cervix and vagina
  • vulva

Our surgeons have particular expertise in a number of highly specialized technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques. In many cases, our surgeons have helped to develop or refine these cutting-edge methods, including:

  • peritoneal therapy (administering drugs to the areas of the abdomen near the ovaries) for the treatment of ovarian cancer
  • aggressive surgical therapy for ovarian cancer
  • new imaging modalities and early detection devices
  • active research programs targeting new ovarian and cervical screening techniques, including the use of serum proteinomic screening
  • multiple clinical trials, including experimental and biologic therapies that are improving response rate and survival for patients with gynecologic cancer
