Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery

UPMC Cancer Centers’ surgeons specializing in head and neck surgical oncology focus on the surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. Our multidisciplinary team of health care professionals is committed to providing patients with the most comprehensive cancer care for the treatment of head and neck cancers, including thyroid, salivary glands, mouth, throat, and voice box.

UPMC surgeons have particular expertise in a number of highly specialized technologies, including minimally invasive surgical procedures to remove tumors. In many cases, our surgeons have helped to develop or refine these cutting-edge methods, including:

  • endoscopic, video-assisted thyroidectomy
  • endoscopic resection of tumors of the vocal cords
  • partial laryngectomy
  • endoscopic approaches to skull base tumors
  • functional, selective neck surgery to remove metastatic cancer
  • vaccines for prevention of cancer recurrence and second cancers
  • clinical trials of targeted therapy for head and neck and thyroid cancer
