Laparoscopic Staging Procedures
A laparoscope is a thin, lighted tube attached to a video camera which allows
surgeons to view inside the body without having to open the abdomen. Laparoscopic
surgery is done using small "buttonhole" incisions, leading to
less discomfort, less risk of complications, and quicker recovery for the
patient.
The most sensitive way to assess the spread of tumors in the abdominal
cavity is by direct visualization. This can be done with the laparoscope;
an ultrasound probe can be placed directly over the organs or nodes for
more detail. If suspicious tissue is found, a biopsy is performed.
Laparoscopic staging is performed by the Department of Surgical Oncology. More information about this procedure is available at their website.
