Neurosurgical Oncology

The neurosurgical oncology program at UPMC Cancer Centers specializes in cutting-edge treatment of patients with tumors affecting the nervous system. The program is dedicated to providing the best treatment available for patients with benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors of the brain and spinal cord, as well as patients with metastatic cancer which has spread to the nervous system. Our physicians also lead research efforts to develop more effective therapies to combat these tumors.

Our surgeons have particular expertise in a number of highly specialized technologies, including minimally invasive surgical techniques (where surgery is performed through the smallest incisions possible) and radiosurgery. In many cases, our surgeons have helped to develop or refine these cutting-edge methods, including:

• Endoscopic removal of complex tumors of the skull base and brain through the endoscopic endonasal approach, in which tumors are removed through the nostril
• Endoport surgery, an advanced technique where a port is used to access deep regions of the brain, allowing surgery to areas that previously would be impossible to reach
• Complex spinal reconstruction and minimally invasive techniques for spinal disease
• Awake craniotomies, brain surgery in which the patient is awake and functional, to minimize damage to healthy tissue while removing the tumor
• Radiosurgery, including CyberKnife® and Gamma Knife®
