Thoracic Cancers

UPMC Cancer Centers’ thoracic surgeons have extensive expertise in the surgical management of thoracic cancers, including lung and esophageal cancers. Working closely with the Heart, Lung, and Esophageal Surgery Institute, our surgeons are at the forefront of early diagnosis, innovative treatment, and cutting-edge research for thoracic cancers. We offer patients a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of:

  • lung cancer
  • esophageal cancer
  • cancer of the chest wall
  • cancer of the mediastinum
  • other cancers of the thoracic cavity

UPMC surgeons have particular expertise in a number of highly specialized technologies, including minimally invasive surgical procedures to remove tumors. In many cases, our surgeons have helped to develop or refine these cutting-edge methods, including:

  • minimally invasive surgery for esophageal cancer
  • video thoracoscopic lobectomy for lung cancer
  • wedge resection and brachytherapy for high-risk lung cancer patients
  • CT-guided radiofrequency ablation (a thin needle which uses electricity to destroy tumors) for lung cancer in patients who are not good candidates for surgery
  • CyberKnife® radiosurgery for lung cancer and other tumors of the thoracic cavity
  • chemoperfusion for lung cancer and pleural malignancies
  • open surgery for complex malignancies of the esophagus, lung, chest wall, and mediastinum
  • endoscopic laser therapy (a powerful light which destroys cancer cells, which is given through an endoscope (a thin, lighted tube)) for lung and esophageal tumors
  • photodynamic therapy for esophageal cancer, high grade Barrett's dysplasia, and lung cancer
  • endoscopic metal stents to palliate lung cancer and esophageal cancer
