Opportunities

Administrative Support

Evan

Our efforts to build a future without cancer extend beyond our laboratories and treatment rooms and include staff members hard at work, providing crucial support in various offices. Volunteers play an important role by doing computer work such as data entry and performing clerical duties such as labeling, copying, and filing.

Several departments are in need of volunteers in this area. Times available are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5pm. Current projects include data entry, filing, copying, and writing articles for the Volunteer View, a newsletter of the Volunteer & Community Services program.

Healing Power of the Arts

If you’re an artistwhether a musician or a painter – you can use your special talent to foster hope and understanding. Healing Power of the Arts offers patients and their families the opportunity to discover the artist hidden inside each of us. Volunteers play music, create arts and crafts, and read poetry. These activities offer so much more than a much-needed diversion to patients and families; they also provide the means for self-expression and discovery during a challenging time. Healing Power of the Arts helps patients and families as they grieve, recuperate and celebrate life. These opportunities are available to individuals and small groups.

Laboratory Research

QingDong

As of November 30, 2007, the laboratory research program is closed to new applicants until the New Year. Also, as of December 12, 2007, we will not be accepting new applicants until the New Year. Please check the site in January 2008 for updates.

Each day, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) are taking important steps to increase our understanding of cancer and are testing the newest, most advanced treatments to cure it. As a Laboratory Research volunteer, you may assist UPCI scientists with research activities and laboratory procedures. Volunteer positions are available on weekdays only, and your skills and interests could be matched with some of the following laboratory tasks:

  • tissue and cell culture
  • gene transfections
  • solution preparation
  • DNA cloning and sequencing
  • slide staining and filing
  • administrative duties

Patient and Family Support

Nurses, physicians, and oncology social workers at UPMC Cancer Centers treat the person – not just the disease. In this same spirit, volunteers help improve the quality of life for patients and their families by helping nurses with their duties and visiting with patients and their families. You’ll have ample opportunity to do so in the following settings: inpatient units, outpatient clinics, palliative care services, and the registration and information desks. As a volunteer in the area of Patient and Family Support, you can volunteer during weekday, evening or weekend hours. Currently, the UPMC Cancer Centers network sites in New Castle and Beaver are also looking for volunteers to interact with patients, families and visitors.

Special Events

Volunteer & Community Services is an active partner with organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Volunteers assist with coordinating annual fund-raising activities such as Daffodil Days and Race for the Cure. Volunteers may also help with other special events such as hosting parties for patients and their families on our inpatient units or assisting the development office with their fundraising events. Opportunities in this program are available to individuals, groups and organizations.
