About the Site

UPMC Cancer Centers works in tandem with the research and educational programs of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) to offer patients the latest advances in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

The UPMC Cancer Centers Web site was developed over the past year to provide patients, health care professionals, and the general public with a comprehensive repository for UPMC Cancer Centers- and cancer-related information. The UPMC Cancer Centers site was made possible through the generous support of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and the Emma Clyde Hodge Memorial Fund, and developed by the staff at the Benedum Oncology Informatics Center.

The site houses patient-oriented content, including general information about cancer and the cancer treatment programs and services available to patients at UPMC. The site has a streamlined design with easy-to-use navigation elements, a clear organization of major site sections for optimum content delivery, and a comprehensive search engine clearly displayed on all pages.

Striving to be a complete cancer resource, the site also provides information about the programs and services available to patients at all UPMC Cancer Centers locations and expanded information about prevention, screening, treatment, and symptom management for numerous cancers. It also features a redesigned and reorganized clinical trials database with expanded trial summaries, a searchable database of UPMC Cancer Centers physicians; and access to the latest in patient and educational resources, news, and event announcements through content licensing agreements with the National Cancer Institute and ReutersHealth.

The UPCI Web site has, in turn, become a researcher- and physician-focused Web site, promoting the research and academic cancer-related activities at UPCI and the University of Pittsburgh. The UPCI site highlights the new discoveries and future directions of the many programs affiliated with cancer research. For those visiting the UPCI site looking for patient-related information, page redirects have been added to the site to allow a seamless transition to the information on the UPMC Cancer Centers Web site.
